RAINY MOUNTAIN CHURCH CEMETERY

The Rainy Mountain Kiowa Indian Mission Boarding School was established in 1893, about 5 miles south of the present location of Gotebo. Until it's closure in 1920, this centrally located boarding school, was the main opportunity for education for the Kiowa. Enrollment eventually reached 175, with only 2 teachers, with the emphasis on practical arts, homemaking, farming and shop work. Learning to speak and write English was also a major objective.

In 1904, Richard B. Williams gave one acre of his land for a school in the south area of the district. It was named Rainy Mountain because a tributary of Rainy Mountain Creek flowed around north of the School. This school was active till 1949.

The Rainy Mountain Kiowa Indian Mission Church is still well attended by the Kiowa. This is the new Cemetery, located across the road from the parsonage north of the Church. It is located about halfway between Gotebo and Mountain View, then 2 ½ miles south of Hwy.
